Turmeric, saffron, rosemary, ginger … What if these ingredients that we know especially to flavor our dishes became precious allies for our mental health? It is the approach defended by Uma Naidoo, a nutritionist psychiatrist specializing in the link between food and psychic well-being, which highlights them in a forum on the Mind Body Green site.
Turmeric, natural support against anxiety
Made from the root of Turmeric Zedoaria, turmeric is recognized for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. But that’s not all: it would also help to appease anxiety and improve resistance to oxidative stress thanks to its bioactive compounds.
The tip to integrate it easily? You can sprinkle it on a white meat marinade, add it to a vegetable soup or consume it in the form of a supplement.
Saffron, anti-depression touch
This spice of bright red, extracted from the sativus crocus flower, is much more than a simple natural coloring. Saffron is recognized for its antidepressant effects, as shown in a study published in 2018 in the Journal of Pharmacy & Bioallied Sciences. It would also have aphrodisiac properties.
On the kitchen side, it sublimates white rice, scents a squash soup, and can even be infused in hot milk for a soft and relaxing drink.
Rosemary, the memory ally at the table
Already appreciated for its antioxidant virtues and its role in the regulation of blood sugar, rosemary could also improve cognitive functions. A 2016 study available on the National Library of Medicine website highlights its positive effects on memory.
It can infuse it in olive oil for a seasoning rich in taste, or slide it into a garnish in a simmered dish, like a vegetable stew.
Ginger, stimulating and soothing both
Often associated with digestion, ginger is a flagship ingredient in intestinal health. It relieves nausea and acts as a natural anti-inflammatory.
Easy to integrate on a daily basis, it goes perfectly with sautéed vegetables, pressed juices, or even homemade smoothies. A spicy and beneficial touch not to neglect.
