L’Oréal is shaking up luxury makeup: this mini format will appeal to Gen Z at airports

In duty free sections and gift boxes, these luxury mini lipsticks are multiplying. Shortened tubes, lower prices: the mini format is already established among the big houses. Behind this wave, a discreet program brings together the L”Oréal group and the packaging specialist Cosmogen. And this movement could well redesign the way we discover a prestige lipstick.

After an initial test with Valentino Beauty, the group entrusted Cosmogen with the development of mini lipstick packaging for Lancôme, YSL Beauty, Armani Beauty and Prada Beauty. The objective: to adapt the iconic stick of red to the pocket format without losing the luxury DNA. These minis target both travel retail and discovery boxes, with a key consumer in their sights, Gen Z, who is fond of collecting shades.

Cosmogen and L’Oréal: prestige mini lipsticks are taking hold

Concretely, Lancôme, YSL Beauty, Armani Beauty and Prada Beauty have entrusted Cosmogen with the specific development of the packaging of their mini-lipstick formats, intended primarily for travel areas and multi-shade boxes sold in limited editions.

The objectives are clear: offer collections of several shades at more accessible prices, offer a portable format for travel and gradually replace single-use samples.

A double mini packaging model, tailor-made in 1.4 g format

For each home, Cosmogen has designed a completely personalized solution, from the design of the case to industrialization. The idea: respect the color codes, the metal signatures or the opening gesture of each lipstick, even when the format is drastically reduced.

At the same time, the company offers a standard mini-format of 1.4 g, designed like a ready-to-wear lipstick, with a customizable mechanism but part of a controlled industrial framework. This common base secures quality, deadlines and costs for future launches.

Mini lipsticks, Gen Z and travel retail: a market that is accelerating

The movement does not only concern L’Oréal: in the United States, the mini cosmetics market grew by 13% in 2025. Travel formats are gaining ground in duty free, where sets of mini lipsticks multiply the shades for a lower entry ticket.

For Generation Z, these minis tick several boxes: more accessible price, freedom to try, easy to slip into a pocket. For Cosmogen and L’Oréal, the challenge consists of miniaturizing the mechanisms, decoration and hand feel while maintaining a perception of value worthy of the full-size.
