Sponges, towels, brushes: how often should you wash them to avoid bacteria? (you will be surprised!)

In the kitchen or bathroom, we use the same accessories over and over again, convinced that water and soap is enough to keep them clean. However, sponges, towels or brushes prove to be the best allies of bacteria if we forget them in a corner. These are even the most contaminated objects of the home, sometimes more than the toilets.

The good news is that it is enough for a few simple reflexes to limit the risks. The whole thing is to know the good frequency of washing … neither too much nor not enough.

At what rate should these everyday objects wash?

  • Kitchen sponges
Because of humidity and leftover food, they must be washed each week, or even every 3 days in the event of intensive use. A machine cycle at 60 ° C, or a passage to the microwave for a wet minute, eliminates the majority of bacteria.

  • Washable sponges (shower, cleaning)
Rinse them after each use and go to the machine every 1 to 2 weeks. If they smell or change texture, they must be replaced without delay.

  • Bath and hand towels
For healthy skin, it is advisable to wash them every 3 to 5 days. In case of acne, oily skin or sweating, increase the frequency every 2 days. Ideal: a minimum 60 ° C cycle.

  • Toilet gloves
Their finesse does not save them: washing recommended after 2 to 3 uses maximum. These are dead cell reservoirs, which must be evacuated as quickly as possible.

  • Hair brushes
Disadded, cleaned, but rarely washed … And yet, they must be cleaned every 15 days. Dip them in hot soapy water, then rinse well.

  • Makeup brushes and brushes
Cleaning recommended every 2 weeks, or even every week if you use liquid foundation or have sensitive skin. This avoids buttons, infections and inlaid residues.

  • Dishes
More hygienic than sponges, they must be rinsed after each use and washed in depth once a month.

Why is it so important?

Between humidity, heat and organic residues, these accessories create a perfect ground for microbes. A simple forgetting of rinsing, a badly dried towel or an ever disinfected sponge may be enough to create an invisible crop broth. In addition to bad odors, these are risks for the skin, eyes, mucous membranes, or even the digestive system.

A regular maintenance routine, without excess, therefore makes it possible to extend the lifespan of these objects … and that of your health.
