In the list of actions that seem obvious, showering is one of the essentials. However, one question divides: is it better to wash with a washcloth or simply with your bare hands? The debate has left the bathroom to invade the beauty sphere.
Behind this innocuous choice lie the skin barrier, risk of irritation and exposure to bacteria. Dermatologists do not decide absolutely, but describe the strengths and weaknesses of each method, depending on the skin type, the frequency of showers and the hygiene of the accessories.
Washcloth or hands: what dermatologists favor
The glove is attractive for its practicality and its slightly exfoliating effect. But left damp in a hot bathroom, it quickly becomes a breeding ground for germs. Dermatologist Nina Roos recalls that, she explained to , before warning: .
The hands add almost no friction and are more respectful of fragile skin. In an interview with the magazine, dermatologist Dr Rubin recalls that. For sensitive skin, this is therefore often the safest option.
Washcloth: a classic under strict hygiene conditions
Major problem with the glove: its maintenance. Between humidity, heat and soap residue, a glove that struggles to dry becomes a real breeding ground for bacteria. To limit this risk, Nina Roos recommends putting it in the washing machine every 3 to 4 days if used daily, or once a week if it is used less, at 60°C, then letting it dry completely.
The shower net, or djampé, ticks more boxes when it comes to hygiene. Its mesh exfoliates the skin, helps eliminate dead cells and dries much faster than a thick glove, which limits residual moisture. It is generally sufficient to wash it in the machine at around 30°C every three weeks, again ensuring careful drying.
Which method should you adopt depending on your skin: glove, hands or shower net?
Experts repeat: there is no single answer to the question “washcloth or hands”. On sensitive, dry or atopic skin, hands should be used with a gentle cleanser. And then, to provide a little exfoliation without being harsh, dermatologists recommend alternating one day of washing with bare hands, one day with a mesh sponge, in order to respect the skin barrier while refining the skin’s texture.
On normal skin, the use of the glove remains possible, provided you do not rub too vigorously and respect these hygiene rules. Because basically, the problem comes mainly from the combo of repeated friction and poorly washed accessories. Many doctors advise, however, to reserve bare hands for the face, intimate areas, and the skin of children and the elderly, where gentleness takes precedence over exfoliation.
Is washing with a washcloth every day bad for the skin?
It all depends on your skin and the care of the glove. On sensitive skin, dermatologists prefer to limit the use of gloves and favor the hands.
Which is better for sensitive skin: washcloth or hands?
Hands, combined with a gentle cleanser, remain the most respectful method. The washcloth is not recommended on this type of skin.
How often should you wash a washcloth to avoid bacteria?
Common recommendations include machine washing every 3 to 4 days for daily use, with a cycle at 60°C and drying completely.
